Introduction
The fact that business today is international is indisputable with the explosive growth of international trade, foreign direct investments and trade agreements. This has a direct impact on operations because globalisation brings with it economic troughs, currency swings, supplier upheavals and political turmoil, resulting in multi-faceted volatility to which the organisation and its operations needs to adapt (Rasmus & Renker 2012). Operations in a global context need to take into consideration factors such as the growth potential in emerging markets, digitisation of business, electrification, the internet of things (IoT) and connectivity. Technology developments bring down the cost of transportation, communication and significantly impact how product design, manufacturing and supply networks function.
