Comparison between Cultural Characteristics of the Middle East and the West

Purpose
This study identifies the general types of management in the Middle East and particularly construction management.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is mainly theoretical and is based on a literature review and secondary data.
Originality/value
This paper reviews the cultural and management characteristics in the Middle East and the West, along with middle Eastern rules and polices in the construction industry. This highlights potential opportunities and barriers in applying western style management.
Research limitations/implications.
This study is limited only to the cultural context in both the Middle East and the West.
Social implications
The Middle East has its own management style which stems from its culture and Islam. The West also has some influence.
Practical implications
Western firms working in the Middle East need to understand these differences. They should not simply apply their own principles and practices as the easiest route.
Findings
Bringing western management to the Middle East has led both to opportunities and threats.
