Is AI the Most Significant Business Change in Our Times? A Reflective Essay
Volume 20, Issue 4 - October 2025
Mike Bagshaw
Introduction
In recent years, few topics have captured both public imagination and boardroom attention as much as artificial intelligence (AI). Is AI the Most Significant Business Change in Our Times? I have explored this question by situating AI within a broader history of disruptive forces in business, ranging from the Industrial Revolution to the Internet. This reflective essay draws on a presentation I did for undergraduate Business students, and my own critical engagement to assess whether AI truly represents the defining business transformation of our era.
I don't think I can offer a definitive answer, but to frame AI as a disruption that needs to be contextualised, compared, and critically evaluated. In doing so, I wanted to highlight both the excitement surrounding AI's rapid adoption and economic potential, as well as the scepticism that warns against overstatement and technological determinism. My reflection considers three key dimensions: AI's pervasiveness in daily life, its adoption and impact across business sectors, and its place within a lineage of historical disruptions.
