Abstract
The purpose of the current descriptive quantitative study was to examine the roles and skills of CEOs and middle managers, using Cameron and Quinn's Competing Value Framework (CVF) and the Managerial Skill Assessment Instrument (MSAI). There is little literature about these models in the automobile industry in Malaysia. MSAI was used to determine which managerial skills were dominant and which were lacking. The descriptive statistics, mean mode and significance were used to analyse the data. The survey sample consisted of 41 complete dyads representing a distribution of top leaders in the automobile manufacturing and assembly industry in Malaysia. The survey results identified that the CEOs are in the market clan; holding the leadership role of a market quadrant and possess the managerial skills of the market quadrant. In contrast, the MMs are in the clan quadrant in terms of both leadership roles and managerial skills. Thus, the two groups are in opposite quadrants.
