Executive summary
Training transfer refers to the process of applying skills and knowledge acquired in training sessions to everyday work (Blanchard & Thackers, 2007). The current issue in the world of learning and development is that only a small percentage of trainees are successfully applying their new learning when they return to work, which means there is little training transfer (London & Flannerly, 2004). Supervisory support has been identified in academic research as an influential factor affecting training transfer. Training transfer is more likely when supervisors engage with the training, encourage trainees to engage themselves, and communicate the value and relevance of the training. The supervisor can play a vital role in increasing motivation which greatly increases the likelihood of successful training transfer.
