Introduction
According to the UK Employer Skills Survey (Winterbotham et al, 2018), UK employers spent €44.2bn on training in 2017, approximately 2.2% of GDP. Yet many researchers have found that only a small proportion of the skills and knowledge acquired are transferred to the workplace (often described as training transfer) (Baldwin et al, 2017; Burke & Hutchins, 2007; Ford et al, 2018; Grossman & Salas, 2011; Hurt, 2016; Saks & Belcourt, 2006; Velada, et al, 2007). If organisations are to get a good return on their investment in workplace training, they need an understanding of the process of training transfer and the factors that affect it (Baldwin & Ford, 1988; Baldwin et al, 2017; Burke & Hutchins, 2007; Velada et al, 2007).
